CIMNE Seminar -"Soil crushing via DEM", by Marcos Arroyo

In many geotechnical problems soil grading is not a fixed quantity but an evolving one. Constitutive models have been designed to accommodate this, bu they need to be fed with reliable experimental work. Such experimental work is particularly difficult when crushing is the driving mechanism of grading evolution. A reasonable alternative may be found by using the discrete element method (DEM). The talk presents a DEM model designed to do that and illustrates its performance with result from elementary test simulation as well as (virtual) calibration chamber testing.
SPEAKER CVMarcos Arroyo is a Civil Engineer (Madrid, 1991). His specialty is geotechnics. He received his doctorate in 2001 from the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Bristol (United Kingdom). He is currently an Associate Professor at Civil Engineering Department of the UPC (Technical University of Catalonia), in Barcelona, where he teaches marine foundations (MSc Marine Energies) and Geotechnical Engineering (MSc on Soil Engineering, UPC). As a researcher he has also worked at the Politecnico di Milano (Italy) and University College (London, United Kingdom)
