Agustina Giuliodori joins CIMNE to create a new generation of catheters by using numerical methods within the Anaconda's project
The biomedical engineer Agustina Giuliodori from the National University of Córdoba (Argentina) has just joined CIMNE as a PhD Student. Engineer Giuliodori will carry out her doctorate in Civil Engineering during the next few years, under the direction of Dr. Eduardo Soudah and Dr. Joaquín Hernández Ortega and the tutorial of Dr. Ricardo Rossi.
Giuliodori will investigate on how to develop a new generation of catheters for performing mechanical thrombectomies safely and efficiently by using numerical techniques.
Until a couple of years ago, it was not proven that endovascular treatment of stroke was the best option. However, during the year 2015, a series of clinical studies have shown, with the highest level of scientific evidence, that the best treatment is thrombectomy. A thrombectomy is a surgical procedure used to remove a blood clot (thrombus) from a vessel (see on Youtube). The follow-up of the patients during the following years showed that the treatment of stroke by thrombectomy improved the results obtained with respect to other methodologies. Therefore, this technique entered that year in the clinical guidelines, which means that patients who do not receive this treatment may sue their health provider.
Giuliodori research focuses on the collaborative project ANACONDA with the company ANACONDA Biomed. "ANCD Brain®, distal access micro-catheter for cerebral thrombectomies and treatment of acute ischaemic stroke" funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MCIU) though the programme Retos Colaboración.
